Breaking News!

Oh my god. OH MY GOD!!!!

Are you guys sitting down? I hope so. If not you're going to fall over on that big fat ass of yours when you hear the following news.

Lean protein and whole grains are good for you.

Okay everyone. Settle down. Put those torches out.

Now, I know when someone proffers radical ideas like water and grapefruit being good diet foods, it's tempting to want to form a mob and go after her Galileo-style. But let's not rush to judgment. Maybe... just maybe, apples really are good for you like she says.

Ok, seriously, I've been paying attention to a lot of the diet related content on the web since I started this site and I am constantly amazed at how vapid most of it is. I'm beginning to get the feeling that people like reading about and planning for their weight-loss more than they do actually trying to lose weight and that's why there's always an audience for these types of articles. That's understandable, I guess, but it's got to get old after a while.

The "Hungry Girl" behind the article above has her own website. It's very well put together, it's bright and fun and I'm sure she's a lovely person. However it really seems to only have two types of articles, the blatantly obvious like the one above or the insanely moronic like how to make pizza with a Fiber One Cereal crust. And no, I'm not shitting you. Wait... so you're saying I can eat that tasty looking pizza on the right or that pile of turds covered with cheese on the left. Hmmm, I'm stymied.

If you're seriously sitting around pounding Fiber One into a pizza crust you need to take a long hard look at yourself. This is no way to live. And I don't think it's a very good way to diet either. Wouldn't it make more sense, if you're really craving pizza, to learn to just eat half the pizza on the right and save the rest for breakfast. Isn't that what someone without a weight problem would do if they were in the mood for pizza? Yes, of course it is. They sure as hell wouldn't be frankensteining up some food in the kitchen that will taste like baked feces and ultimately do nothing for their pizza craving.

Remember, we want to look at the weight loss process as practice for the way we're going to eat and move for the rest of our lives. If you never give yourself a chance to practice moderation with real food that you would find in the real world you have no chance of keeping the weight off even if you do lose the weight.

You see, what I'm suggesting is a way of losing weight that is working for me and doesn't have any traps at the end (at least none I can see yet). If you've lost weight by eating "ice cream sandwiches" made of rice-cakes and fat-free cool whip (yes, that's another one of her ideas) you're eventually going to have to deal with the issue of eating like a normal person. That's really the thrust of my ideas on dieting. Eat as you're going to eat when you reach your goal weight. Because if the way you're going to eat at your goal weight is good enough to keep you at that goal weight, then it's also good enough to get you there in the first place. It has to. It's math.

And remember that a good portion of your diet should be made up of lean proteins and whole grains.

Jokes!

I'm so happy to hear someone post against HungryGirl. I went to her site a few years ago and saw the saddest looking chilidog -- a little tofu dog on a piece of lowfat bread with some nonfat chili crapped on top of it. It looked awful. Awful. I didn't go much further into the site. But I've had friends and relatives forward me links to HungryGirl -- can't they see that her food is shit? I'd rather eat one bite of ice cream and be hungry than full on diet, packing-peanut-tasting food. And in fact that is the weight-maintenance method I use. The very one you describe in this brilliant blog!
